Grange Castle Power Plant, Co.Dublin

Ampromech were engaged in the M&E design as part of an overall design and build team for a new back-up power plant in Grange Castle Business Park designed to account/compensate for possible fluctuations in the grid as a result of the developing integration of renewable energies. The plant is designed to act as a peaking plant, feeding a total of 111MW of electrical energy into the Irish grid to help cover periods of high demand.

Project GCPP:

The overall project involved the provision of the following:

6 no. engine cells each containing 1 no. 20MW gas turbine engine and vendor skids.

Utility spaces for LV distribution

Compressed air and LPHW boilers

Diesel fuel oil, urea and lube oil storage facilities

MV substation

Security, warehouse, and pump house buildings

Vortex fire supression, foam storage and sprinkler tank, and fire pump enlosures.

Project Specific Design Services:

The key aspects of the APM role on this project were as follows:

Design of fuel handling systems to ensure fuel maintained in top condition over an extended time period.

Design of a fuel oil and ancillary chemical storage facility, containing two million litres of diesel fuel oil in 9 storage tanks, Lube Oil and UREA in an EPA compliant secondary storage facility

Design of a high pressure gas system including duty standby gas filtration, pressure reduction and associated controls and monitoring.

Design of all site utilities including compressed air (service and control), water, LPHW, low pressure gas.

Design of Ventilation systems to allow adequate airflow, heating and cooling of engine bay including dilution air to limit extent of hazardous areas.

Completion of HAZOP, Hazardous Area Classification and Computational Fluid Dynamics studies to support the design.

Integrated design of vendor supplied P&IDs and systems, including high pressure air systems, and hand-in-hand coordination with other disciplines.

3D modelling of all process & utility equipment and piping to LOD 300, providing adequate access to all components in a particularly tight site.
